Chest Pain and Stress in Young Women

The connection between chest pain and stress is very complex. The mere fact that one experiences chest pain is itself a stressful event. We all tend to associate chest pain with heart attacks, and heart attack is still the leading cause of death in the USA, in Canada, the UK, Australia, and most of the developed world.

In younger women, however, the connection between chest pain and stress is usually more direct. Anyone experiencing chest pain should see a doctor for a medical diagnosis - and if the chest pain is continuous and severe, or starting in the chest and spreading outward through the body, someone else should do the driving. But here is what the doctor is likely to look for:

1. Pain that is likely to originate in the heart, such as the total blockage of an artery supplying part of the heart muscle, is behind the breastbone, vague, and has a squeezing feeling. It will probably last more than 15 to 30 minutes, and rest will probably relieve it. Most women who have heart attacks, incidentally, have no pain at all.

2. Pain that probably does not originate in the heart is localized, sharp, and prickly. It is the kind of pain that the sufferer can point out with her finger, saying, "It's mostly here." Pain just below the left nipple almost never originates in the heart.
