Kidney stones can be excruciatingly painful. Kidney stone pain, however, is not something that only your doctor can treat. Here are some scientifically grounded methods of relieving kidney stone pain that can work for you:

1. Drinking More Water

Simply drinking more water can help flush out small stones before they become large stones. Other beverages are also helpful. A study at the Harvard School of Public Health found that drinking one cup of coffee a day (either regular or decaf) reduces the risk of getting kidney stones by 10 per cent. Drinking a cup of tea very day reduced the incidence of kidney stones by 14 per cent. Drinking half a can of beer reduced the risk of developing kidney stones by 21 per cent, and drinking a glass of wine a day reduced the risk of kidney stones by 30 per cent.

2. Drinking Juice Is NOT a Good Idea

Drinking juice, on the other hand, greatly increases the risk of kidney stones. The same Harvard study found that drinking a cup of apple juice every day increased the risk of kidney stones 75 per cent, and drinking a cup of grapefruit juice a day increased the risk of kidney stones by 85 per cent. Using cranberry juice tablets is associated with high risk of kidney stones in women, although this may be due to the fact that most women who use cranberry juice supplements have bladder infections, which themselves increase the risk of kidney stones.

3. Low-Calcium Diet Might Increase the Kidney Stone Risk

Even though most kidney stones are made out of calcium, a low-calcium diet increases, rather than decreases, the risk of stones. This is especially the case when milk is replaced with dark leafy greens such as spinach as the primary source of calcium in the diet. Dark leafy greens are a rich source of oxalate, the other component of calcium oxalate stones.

4. Lemonade is better than Orange Juice

Drink lemonade rather than orange juice. Lemon is the only kind of citrus that does not aggravate kidney stones.

5. Vitamin C can form Kidney Stones

If you take vitamin C, be sure you drink water. Taking even up to 1,500 mg of vitamin C a day will reduce the risk of stones, but if you get dehydrated, vitamin C will form stones.

Dietary measures are best for preventing stones, but if one you get them consider ultrasound pain relief.
